What a website actually costs in Kenya

Design starts at $390 and build starts at $840. Here is what sits inside each tier, why design and development are quoted separately, and the four things that move the number.

Ask five Nairobi agencies what a website costs and you will get five ranges, none of which mean anything until someone defines "website". So here are our actual numbers, and more usefully, what each one buys.

Design and development are quoted separately. That is not a way of making the first number look smaller — it is because they are genuinely separable, and a lot of clients only need one of them. If you already have a designer, you want a build. If you have a template you like and need it made properly, you want a build. If you have neither, you want both, and we will quote them as one project.

Design

Landing Page — $390. One page that has to convert — a launch, a campaign, a pitch. One page, every breakpoint, every state. 1 – 2 weeks.

Marketing Site — $1,150. The main site — the thing your whole funnel points at. Home, services, work, about, contact, plus the components that hold them together. 3 – 4 weeks.

Product & Design System — $2,750+. Application UI your team will keep building on for years. This is where a component library stops being a nice extra and becomes the deliverable. 6 – 10 weeks.

Development

Marketing Build — $840. A fast, well-built marketing site your team can edit. 2 – 4 weeks.

E-commerce — $2,150. Storefronts where speed and checkout directly move revenue. 5 – 8 weeks.

Platform — $4,450+. Applications, portals and anything with real business logic. 8 – 14 weeks.

What actually moves the number

  • How many templates, not how many pages. Forty pages that use six layouts is a smaller job than eight pages that each look different. When you count your site, count the shapes.
  • Integrations. A payment gateway, a CRM, an inventory system, M-Pesa — each one is a thing that can fail at three in the morning, so each one is designed, built and tested rather than dropped in.
  • Who writes the copy. The single most common cause of a project going long is not development. It is waiting for the words.
  • Who maintains it afterwards. A site your team will edit weekly needs a content model and an editor they can actually use. A site that will not change for two years does not.
Most of the expensive websites we have been asked to rescue were not expensive because they were ambitious. They were expensive because they were quoted before anyone had defined what was in them.

What is not in the number

Domains, hosting, stock photography, paid fonts and any third-party subscription are yours and are billed to you, not marked up through us. We will tell you what they cost before you commit — hosting a marketing site properly is tens of dollars a month, not hundreds, and anyone quoting you a large recurring "maintenance" fee for a static site should be asked what it covers.

How to get a real number

Send us three things: what the site has to do, roughly how many distinct layouts you think it needs, and when you need it live. That is enough for a figure. You do not need a brief, a wireframe or a budget you are nervous about naming — and if the honest answer is that you need less than we sell, we will say that too.
